Web based High School courses

Online classes for High school students provide an alternative to the traditional classroom environment.

For example,

Every four years we turn on our television sets and are glued to the TV. watching sports that most of us only care about every four years. Sports like swimming, figure skating and gymnastic gain our attention as we cheer on our country at the summer and winter Olympics. While we are watching these athletes complete at the highest level the ages of these athletes appear on our screen. Eighteen, seventeen, sixteen and even as young as thirteen years old represent their respective countries and complete for gold. I know I do it, and I’m sure most of you do it as well; we wonder how are these kids able to participate and give some much time to a sport and also receive a proper education. The most successful way is through Online Private Schools. Online schools like, Windells Academy has provided an opportunity for athletes to complete for their dream and still receive an education. Students who attend this academy, located in Mount Hood, Oregon are able to student diverse curriculum while being able to maintain their practice schedules. According to an article written on the advantageschool.com website founder Allison Dampier stated, “Advantages offers hundreds of courses at the pace best suited for a student’s learning. That philosophy makes us a perfect match for Windells and four students all over the world who require an accessible education model.”

Other examples included homeschooled students, students who are ill and away from school, have troubled in traditional high school settings and students who failed a class and need to make up a requirement. Online classes allow students to easily take advantage of the resources on the web. You can first hand see Martin Luther King, Jr., I Have a Dream speech or watch the Apollo 13 Moon landing.

  1. This is interesting since I have a student this year who is very ill. We have been in school for a week now and she has only been in school actually 2 days. I just received another email that she is once again hospitalized. I think that web based education is a great alternative to offer students who have circumstances that prevent them from attending traditional school. On the other hand, this type of education is a great way to reach the students who have decided to drop out of high school due to the fact that they didn't fit in to the "traditional mold" of what school actually is.

  2. Before reading your post I was unaware that an internet based high school education was available. I too have always wondered about how kids who participated in such high levels of international competition were able to keep up with their studies while competing abroad. Likewise, I have always questioned the quality of education individuals who chose to home school their kids could provide. The resources available on-line to assist those who wish to home school their children is amazing to me.

  3. This is a topic my principal was talking with me about a class at our school. We had a hard time hiring a part time science teacher for additional science classes. We talked about what classes could we turn into a web-based class. We could have students report to computer lab and then work on science during this time. Using technology for this type of class gives the students a different experience learning science versus the traditional method.
