How have other schools/teachers integrated technology into their learning environment? By Tanya Winter

Integrating Technology - EDUC-506-03

The integration of technology should serve to guide, expand and enhance learning objectives. It is understood that teachers and students do need to spend time learning the basics of using a computer. This is necessary in order to move to effectively integrating technology.  Curriculum integration with the use of technology involves the infusion of technology as a tool to enhance the learning in a content area or multidisciplinary setting  Technology enables students to learn in ways not previously possible  Effective integration of technology is achieved when students are able to select technology tools to help them obtain information in a timely manner, analyze and synthesize the information, and present it professionally. The technology should become an integral part of how the classroom functions as accessible as all other classroom tools (http://www.usask.ca/education/coursework/802papers/antifaiff/antifaiff.htm).

I remember computers class back in the day when I was in HS.  Ok, perhaps I must stress the fact that I go WAY back….1996 was the first year I remember having computers with the Internet.  We were not to go on-line EVER unless instructed to do so in some sort of class assignment such as, “look up http://www.blah/ blah blah”… My how things have changed!  My three year old son uses the Internet (with my supervision of courseJ.  He loves to play matching games and watch any information video clips on dinosaurs that he can find.  Anymore, computers are almost vital because of the endless supply of knowledge available to the world.  The competition for knowledge is fierce!  Teachers are integrating computers into the classroom more and more.

Today, most teachers have not only been exposed to the internet but also have access at home or at school. In fact, a large number of schools are being retrofitted to place the internet in every classroom. Even more exciting than this is the newest technology: Wireless. A school can purchase a 'Portable Classroom'. This consists of laptops networked together, allowing students to work at their desks WITHOUT wires. If the laptops are networked to a printer, students can print from their personal computer to the classroom printer. Imagine the possibilities! It has awesome ideas for integration according to different sub-titles such as note-taking, homework, and cooperative.  Check it out!

Some of the coolest ideas I have seen so far are based off of my student observations.  Students use the computers in special needs in amazing ways.  I have witness the use of special needs software, but the best of all were tools for students who could not even speak.  These students were able to voice his/her opinion through computers that speak for them. Amazing stuff!
I have watched computers being used for general note-taking and homework, but I have also witnessed the creation of music videos in music class and magazines being created in computers class.  Computers can be used for pen pals overseas, and on-line libraries!!  The possibilities are endless!
